Summer, summer, summertime...

Is there anything better than summertime??!! It's right up there with Halloween for me. My favorite time of year is in full swing. Basically, May through October is my happy time--long days, summer weather, Halloween! I just tolerate the other six months. Once the long days begin and the weather warms up, I feel like the Grinch when his heart grows three sizes.

Such a fantastic time of year. Do you have your summer playlist yet? No? Well I highly suggest you put one together immediately. I'm listening to mine right now. Summer deserves it's own soundtrack. Each year my summer-themed mix changes a little, but these five songs are on it every time:

"Doin' Time" by Sublime
"Summertime" by DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince
"In the Summertime" by Mungo Jerry
"Surf Wax America" by Weezer
"The Boys of Summer" by Don Henley (although I usually listen to The Ataris' cover)

Beach time with my sister!

For all you list-lovers out there, I want to remind you of how much I love my summer checklist. This old blog post will explain more, but basically, every year I compose a list of activities I must do in the summer at least once. Otherwise it doesn't quite feel like summer.

It might sound silly making a list because it seems that once summer rolls around you will instinctively go swimming and eat popsicles, but I've learned that's not always the case. As an adult I've found that summer can easily pass me by if I don't plan for it. I present to you my updated list for summer (in no particular order):

1. Go to the beach.
2. Swim in a pool/go to a pool party.
3. See a movie in the cemetery.
4. Eat refreshing summer treats.
5. Sit by a campfire at night.
6. Ride a bike.
7. Take pictures with a disposable underwater camera.
8. Watch fireworks.
9. Go to the Hollywood Bowl.
10. Decide on a Halloween costume.

I actually have this list taped up on my computer at work so I'm reminded of it every day. If you read my previous list, you'll notice a few changes. I took off "be kissed by the sun" because that pretty much happens with any of the swimming activities. Also, now that I'm in my 30s, I'm obsessed with sunscreen, so I don't want the sun kissing me too much. I also took off "go to a drive-in movie theater" because that desire has dwindled now that there are so many other outdoor movie options to choose from.

I replaced those two things with "watch fireworks" and "go to the Hollywood bowl" because it occurred to me that I get sad if I don't do those things. I also added "go to a pool party" as an addendum to "swim in a pool." If you've known me longer than five minutes, you already know that I love a good pool party. I've had dreams recently where I try to convince people to throw a pool party. There's just something about floating in a pool with friends while cheeseburgers are cooking on the grill and music is blasting in the background. It makes me happy.

Free box seats at the Hollywood Bowl!
As you can see from my pictures, I have been kicking ass at my summer checklist. And it's not even July yet! Wahoo! Can't wait for more summer awesomeness. And yes, I've already chosen my Halloween costume. I will reveal it in a future blog post.

So who's throwing a pool party?
